Upland Teachers and lay-offs

Conventional wisdom says work for the Government and you'll always have a job...or is it you'll never have to work a day in your life? Anyway, budgets have been slashed and as many as 78 Upland Teachers could get laid off.

I sure hope that UUSD is running lean in the administrative departments before they go knocking off teachers. Also, I have no idea what a Principle makes but if any more than 10% more than the highest paid teacher, it's wrong.

Really, you don't even need a principle. Just hire a 60 year old man to stroll threw the playground thumping a paddle in his hand and job done.

At Sierra Vista, we all thought Mr Barton and Mr. Riley had had paddles. No one spread any rumors that Mrs. Hughes had a paddle but that's just because kids don't believe women will swat them...unless they're nuns.

I can joke about this because I'm a pro at getting laid-off.

Red Light Cameras go dim....maybe

I hate these red light cameras (Upland locations after the jump) in Upland. No, it's not the Big Brother thing and it's not that I want to run red lights. It's the lies that they inspire.

DB has a story about Upland considering getting rid of these things because they are costing the city money. Also in the report, Police Chief Steve Adams says that these were put in place for "Public Safety" and when they were installed we were all told of the studies that proved that these save lives.

Pffft! BS, we all know this is a money grab. Those things are there to make money and nothing else. If no one ever ran a red light when those were installed and they made no money, they'd be down tomorrow.

Chief Adams also says in the same report that the reason we need to dump these things is because they are costing Upland money. Now, it sounds like a price is being put on our safety.

Here's the real scoop. Upland threatens to cancel contract. Redflex (those turncoat camera operators) sends a sales guy over to calm everyone down. $8.9k (or a figure more like $5.6k) credit is extended, cameras stay up. Standard play.

Mr. Sundstrom is....inappropriate at best

OK, well, here's another pervert that somehow got an all access pass to our local schools. 47 year old Daniel Harold Sundstrom, a teacher assistant at Pioneer Jr. High was sentenced today to 270 days in Jail after pleading no contest to attempted sexual battery of a 14 year old female student.

This guy is married with has kids (at least one) and yet he was on Myspace telling this 14 girl he wanted to have sex with her. WTF? Hasn't this guy seen Dateline?

It's about time to start taking someone to task over at Upland USD. Background checks...your not doing them right.

One silver lining that has come out of this is that girl is obviously super brave. Credit to her for pointing out this guy.

I also feel bad for the family of this guy. Total victims here.

One note, for me this story does not taint all Upland teachers. It does show there might be a problem here but in no way am I saying that all or even a majority are perverts. I know one teacher here and I went to school here k-12 and not once have I run across anyone that is even capable of this.

Chicks Sporting Goods bought by Dick's

I'm not going to bother making any obvious Chick/Dick jokes about this because it would just come off "Hackish".

I just found out that Dick's Sporting Goods bought Chick's in 2007. Chicks has been on the forefront of hiring High School girls and selling $40 sweatshirts for years and I hope Dick's is prepared for that.

I can't imagine that they would keep both locations open in east Upland. What will happen if Chick's leaves the center on Foothill and Second. Can H. Salt and Sizzlin' step in and anchor.

I sure as hell don't want to see another Indoor Swap meet like over on Grove.

Rats in Upland!!!

The other day I went over to Petco in the Crossings shopping center. I was walking down and aisle when I noticed a woman with a rat on here shoulder. Disgusting! They actually sell rats there. Do they sell cockroaches and termites too? People that are comfortable with rats as pets are missing some chemical upstairs.

I have had to kill more than my fair share of rats in my life and it's people like this are the problem.

If your dogs escape, they end up getting run over or sent to the Pound. Same thing with cats. If your rat escapes, they terrorize the neighborhoods by spreading diseases, chewing holes in houses, and crapping everywhere.

Parking at Bed, Bath and Beyond

I was up at the Colonies shopping center the other day and I had a spare few minutes. I decided to check out the parking lot that is only accessible by going behind BB&B.

You've seen the lot because it's right on the corner of 19th and Campus south of BB&B. It has 42 parking spaces and for the life of me, I have no idea who is supposed to park there.

I went to BB&B during Christmas and there wasn't even 42 people there.

WTF...Sizzlin' in Upland?...Where's my The Sizzler?

Look, I love Sizzler. I'm kind of a schmo though so I don't really count. Sizzler in has had a long run in Upland. The little restaurant near Chick's on Foothill has been a good neighbor. They served good food, at good prices and even sponsored Little League teams for many years. Unfortunately that run is over...kind of...

On the good side, as far as I can tell, the only thing that has changed is the two letters at the end. I didn't ask but I'm guessing that the franchise fee's had something to do with it. Hell, if the Bleu Cheese stays the same they can call that place Dumpster's and I'd still hit it.

"The" Sizzler is (apparently) a victim of it's own Salad/Dessert/appetizer Bar success. They started focusing too much on the Bar and lower the quality of the entree's. Who cares? Who orders a steak at La Sizzler (ummm Steakhouse) anyway? Not me, no one in my circle.

Unfortunately, due to my wife not being a big fan of The Sizz, I don't get over there often. I will make sure to support Sizzlin' this year.

Upland Hates Books

Note: This is not a story about Fantasy Baseball or sports so read on without fear.

So the other day I heard that The Sporting News had released their 2009 Fantasy Baseball Preview magazine. OK I admit it, I'm a fantasy baseball geek. Anyway, not the point. I figured I'd stop by the local News Stand or Book Store.

Off I go, over to Foothill and Mountain to the book store...nothing...it's probably been gone for years but I didn't notice it was missing until now.

Back to google to check it out. No leads.

I had to go out of town to find a book store. So we have like 5 porn shops, 10+ Check Cashing stores and not one bookstore.

A few years ago I lived in a town only slightly larger than Upland that had the best Used and New bookstore ever. We need something like this.

If I have missed a bookstore, please correct me. Look out Upland Public Library...Upland is on to your free book loaning ways.
